[1. Identify the Essential Requirements.]

Stop rejecting yourself from jobs you haven't even applied for.

You find a job opening that looks perfect for you.

The salary is good. The responsibilities match your experience. You can see yourself doing the job.

Then you scroll down to the requirements.

"3 years of experience required."

You have 2.

"Experience with Salesforce preferred."

You've never used it.

"Bachelor's degree required."

You have relevant experience but no degree.

And just like that, you close the page and move on.

But here's what you need to understand: You don't always need to meet every requirement to be a strong candidate.

The secret is knowing which requirements matter most and which ones are simply preferences.

Here's how to tell the difference.

1. Identify the Essential Requirements.

These are the qualifications you genuinely need to perform the job or meet a specific condition of employment.

Look for requirements such as:

- A professional licence or certification required by law.
- Legal authorization to work in a particular country.
- A specific technical skill that is central to the role.
- A mandatory qualification explicitly required for the position.
- Experience with a critical tool or process that you must use from day one.

For example, if a nursing position requires a valid nursing licence, having excellent communication skills doesn't replace that licence.

Likewise, if a role requires security clearance you cannot obtain, you may not be eligible.

When a requirement is genuinely essential, don't ignore it.

However, don't assume every item listed under "Requirements" is automatically non-negotiable. Read the job description carefully.

2. Learn to Recognize Preferences.

These are qualifications that can strengthen your application but may not be necessary for you to succeed in the role.

Watch for phrases such as:

- Preferred qualifications
- Nice to have
- An advantage
- Ideally
- Bonus points if you have...
- Familiarity with [a particular tool] is a plus.

For example, a company hiring a social media manager might prefer someone with experience using Hootsuite.

If you have successfully managed social media accounts using Buffer or another scheduling tool, you may still be a strong candidate.

Why?

Because you already understand the underlying skill. Learning another scheduling platform may be relatively straightforward.

Don't let the absence of a preferred tool stop you from applying when your core skills match the job.

3. Look Beyond the Years of Experience.

A job advert says:

"3–5 years of experience in digital marketing."

You have 2 years of experience, but you've managed campaigns, analyzed performance, created content, and helped businesses generate leads.

Should you apply?

Possibly, yes.

The number of years is one way employers assess experience, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

Someone with 2 years of relevant, hands-on experience may be more capable than someone with 4 years of limited exposure.

Instead of focusing only on the number of years, ask yourself:

- Have I performed similar responsibilities?
- Can I demonstrate relevant results?
- Do I understand the skills required for this position?
- Can I provide examples of work that prove my competence?

If you can answer yes to most of these questions, consider applying.

However, if the experience requirement is tied to a senior position involving significant independent responsibility, assess the gap honestly.

4. Compare your Qualifications with the Actual Job Responsibilities.

Here's a simple exercise.

Suppose a remote customer support position requires:

✅ Excellent written communication.
✅ Experience handling customer enquiries.
✅ Ability to resolve customer complaints.
✅ Familiarity with Zendesk.
✅ Two years of customer support experience.

You have strong communication skills, experience handling customer enquiries, and one year of relevant experience.

However, you've never used Zendesk. You may still be a competitive candidate because you already possess several core skills.

You can learn the software, and your experience is relevant.

But if the position requires a specific licence or technical qualification that you don't possess, that is a different situation.

Focus on your ability to perform the job, not just how many boxes you can tick.

5. Don't Hide your Gaps. Demonstrate your Strengths.

If you decide to apply, don't spend your cover letter apologizing for the qualifications you lack.

Instead, highlight the relevant skills and experience you bring.

For example, rather than saying: "I know I don't have the required three years of experience, but I hope you'll consider me."

You could say: "My experience managing customer enquiries, resolving complaints, and maintaining high communication standards has prepared me to contribute effectively to your customer support team."

The second approach focuses on your value.

If you're missing a particular tool or skill, explain how your existing experience transfers to the role when relevant.

And remember: Never claim to have qualifications or experience you don't possess.

6. Use this Simple Rule Before Deciding Not to Apply.

Ask yourself three questions:

Question 1: Do I meet the genuinely mandatory requirements?
Question 2: Can I perform most of the core responsibilities using my existing skills and experience?
Question 3: Are the qualifications I'm missing mainly preferences or skills I could reasonably learn?

If the answers are yes, yes, and yes, the job may be worth applying for.

If you lack a legally required licence, cannot meet a mandatory eligibility condition, or are missing a critical skill that you cannot yet demonstrate, focus on opportunities that better match your current qualifications.

Here's the bottom line.

You don't need to be a perfect match for every job. But you do need to be a credible candidate.

Stop asking, "Do I meet 100% of the requirements?"

Start asking, "Can I demonstrate that I have the essential qualifications and can perform this job successfully?"

That small change in mindset could help you discover opportunities you've been overlooking.

Have you ever found a job you wanted but decided not to apply for because you didn't meet all the requirements?

What was the requirement that stopped you?
